LITEHOUSE - horecapaviljoen

Op verzoek van de KBO - zie het artikel in de Wijkkrant Katendrecht - komt er een klein paviljoen aan de voet van de ss Rotterdam. Dit etablissement is gepland op de kop van het Derde Katendrechtsehoofd. Het interne oppervlakte is 60 m2 en het terras is eveneens 60 m2. De bouw zou in de zomer van 2009 starten, maar ook het aanvragen van de bouwvergunning gaf wat vertraging; pas op 9 oktober 2009 werd de bouwvergunning verleend aan de ss Rotterdam (kenmerknummer V2009/00208). Van de site van de architect RAL 2005 (Duzan Doepel, samen met Roelof Heida) hier wat tekst en een van de plaatjes:

"With the coming of the Rotterdam SS, Katendrecht will soon become the newest ‘hotspot’ in Rotterdam. The ship itself is an attraction, but the head of the pier, where the pavilion for the ‘Rotterdam’ will be realised is the actual ‘hotspot’. This site connects different worlds. The past and the future in the form of the ‘Rotterdam’, the city and the harbour due to the fantastic views over the river.

The pavilion strives to achieve a link between the robustness of this location and the ‘smallness’ of the program. A small pavilion that makes optimal use of the site by offering views over the Maas and of the ‘Rotterdam’. A vertical extrusion of half of the program turns the small volume into a modest landmark. The entire building is clad with white and transparent PVC panels. At night the higher volume is lit up on the inside, transforming the structure into a Litehouse."



Over smaak schijnt niet te twisten te zijn, maar het is een winnend ontwerp - dus moet het wel mooi zijn. Wat daarbij opvalt is dat er wel héél erg weinig geld beschikbaar is gesteld om op die prominente plek iets bijzonders neer te zetten. Nogal in schril contrast met de 240 miljoen euro die aan het schip zélf zijn uitgegeven ...
